Technical Specifications

Case Study 1: Workforce Housing Using Flat Pack Containers in Northern Canada
Location: Northwest Territories, Canada
Project Duration: February 2023 – April 2023
My Role: Project Manager, ZN House
Project Background: At the beginning of 2023, ZN House was given a task to supply flat-pack container housing for a resource development site in the remote area of Northern Canada. The place of the project was prone to very cold weather, heavy snow loads, and had limited site access. The client needed a quick deployment, high thermal performance, and structural safety that could be trusted.
I, as the Project Manager at ZN House, was the main person who planned, coordinated the design and the strategy for the on-site deployment. I was responsible for making the climate-specific design changes, coordinating the logistics, and ensuring that the safety requirements of the locals were met.
Solution Provided: To be able to fulfill the challenging R-value standards of extremely cold areas, ZN House created some special equipment with 75mm high-density Rockwool sandwich panels and double-glazed low-E windows with argon gas filling. For additional strength, the metal structure was wrapped in 0.4 mm galvanized steel sheets; thus, the units will be able to resist a snow load of up to 1.5kN/m² and arctic wind at high speeds. Additionally, the envelope was designed to meet ASHRAE 90.1 requirements for semi, heated spaces. To avoid the steel frame from serving as a thermal bridge, thermal break gaskets were used.
Outcome: The housing units were set up in less than a month. The containers were able to keep the temperature stable inside and were thus safe and comfortable living quarters for the site staff throughout the cold season. The client informed that the business hours that were lost were minimized, and the morale of the workforce has improved.

Case Study 2: Flat Pack Container Housing for Emergency Accommodation in the Philippines
Location: Central Luzon, Philippines
Project Duration: September 2022 – November 2022
My Role: Project Manager, ZN House
Project Background: After major floods hit Central Luzon in December 2022, the local government authority engaged with ZN House to shelter the families who had to leave their homes. Among the problems that hindered the project were quick delivery, few facilities, and the necessity of strong and weather-tight houses.

I went along with the container setup, the vehicle loading plan, and the local people installation work through dispatch coordination. My knowledge of such kind of projects in the rainy and flooded areas helped me a lot when we had to change the flat pack container design.
Solution Provided: To deal with the humid situation and the risks of flooding in Central Luzon, ZN House put up a specially designed elevated galvanized steel chassis to keep the water out. To achieve the most natural cross-ventilation, we decided on 50mm EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) sandwich panels covered with a moisture-proof film and fitted with aluminum alloy sliding windows. The structure is built to be robust enough to withstand Seismic Zone 4, thereby guaranteeing the safety of the families who have been relocated in case of aftershocks. The units were anchored according to National Structural Code of the Philippines (NSCP) guidelines for Seismic Zone 4, using reinforced base plates to ensure lateral stability during high-magnitude aftershocks.
Outcome: Our modular flat pack homes for extreme climates were up and running within a few weeks and gave people a safe place to stay during the recovery phase. The containers held up well against the heavy rains and high humidity, and the project received acknowledgment for its great functioning and trustworthiness.
